IN MEMORIUM..

In Memoriam

Barbara Rogers, good friend of Jimmy Lee Young, passed away suddenly at her home in Rosamond, California, last week. Barbara was originally from Illinois, and made her home in California. She was currently the head librarian at NASA, at Edwards, AFB. She was in attendance at the Native American Heritage luncheon on November 16th, and shared photos of her motorcycle trip to Kernville.

Nicknamed "boss" by Jimmy, Barbara was a kind soul, loved by many. She was instrumental in starting the 'featured artist' program at the Kern County Library in Rosamond, which Jimmy still performs for, in support of the reading programs held there. She had worked for many years in the corporate sector, before taking over as librarian at the Wanda Kirk Branch in Rosamond.

Memorial services will be held on Saturday, December 16th, at 1:00 pm, at the Wayside Chapel in Rosamond, CA.

Jimmy Lee Young recieves double nomination at the LaMusicawards! Anduhyaun, the new single, is nominated for Single of The Year, and Jimmy Lee for Male Singer Songwriter of the Year, in the Americana category!.The song was recorded with drummer Gil Gabaldon II, and the following native artists: Three time Native American Music Award (NAMA) winner Felipe Rose of The Village People, NAMA 2005 Female Artist of The Year Yolanda Martinez, 2005 NAMA Best Country Album winner, Qua Ti Si, seven time NAMA nominee, native flautist Eddie Three Eagles. -
The song is dedicated to Anduhyaun houses in Canada, which help battered homeless men, women and children, and help to preserve their Ojibwe culture.
-
"I am very grateful to the great spirit for these nominations, because they are bringing more awareness about the work of Anduhyaun, Inc., under the hand of Ms. Blanche Meawassige, their CEO. It is true that we have spoken and we are talking about coming to Canada in June. Also, I have agreed to be their national spokesperson. She has spoken about us doing national Indigineous People's Televesion and Radio. I am very happy to see this dream unfolding. Today, Anduhyaun is being talked about in Hollywood!".
-
After finishing a round of 6 shows in September, and another two this month, Jimmy is set to play live at Edwards Air Force base in November for Native American Heritage month.
-
"We have been REALLY busy these past 10 weeks. Gil and I have been in the studio doing the demos for the next CD which we will begin in late winter. The songs are written, and I think our fans will be pleased. We have been playing some of them live, and have gotten great reactions. I am also working on duets for Quatisi and Yolanda, and I am proud to announce that Quatisi's is almost finished recording, and I am still working on Yolanda's. They are strong tunes, and I am very excited to hear them with both of these ladies singing. They are so good on Anduhyaun, and are definitely at the top of the genre, along with Felipe Rose, who is a living legend, and Eddie Three Eagles who is amazing! Gil and Ricky also do an incredible job!"
-
This comes on the heels of news that the 8th Native American Music Awards will be televised nationally to over 80 million homes ( visit www.nammys.com <http://www.nammys.com> ). Jimmy, Quatisi and Yolanda all presented awards that night, and new JLY band bassist Cris Webb performed a tribute to his grandfather Link Wray, that ROCKED!!!
-
" I want to cement in the minds of all the readers that I am grateful also, to Daryl Dragon, my webmaster, and friend, who has helped Gil and I so much in bringing our music to the public, and continues to help us bring native music to the mainstream, and to the award shows that showcase our talent. Thank you!" Rock on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dear friends,
-
Thank you for all your calls and letters! Already i have been asked if we are going to be coming to Milwaulkee for the Indian Summer festival, and the Indian summer Music Awards, and the answer is a big, "YES!!!" Organizers have requested that we play the Oneida stage ( one of the 2 big one's!), and to perform Anduhyaun onstage during the show.We will be on the Oneida stage fromon Sunday, Sept.10th, from 1:30-2:30. We are down to about 7 days for Anduhyaun to actually be in hand from the factory!!!

And...Somebody asked me to list the various projects I am working on, so here they are:
-
I am writing duets for both Yolanda Martinez and Quatisi for their upcoming CD's.. Also, Cris Webb, Link Wray's grandson asked if I wanted to sing on the Link Wray tribute CD, and sent me the material! I said yes, of course. I sang some blues at the Nammy's afterparty, and his mom likes my blues!
-
Cris Martini's movie starts shooting in October, and I am so jazzed to be working some of the promotion end through Native radio stations that have been asking for interviews! Nearly all of the actors he wanted have 'attached' to the project, including Graham Greene, and Delanna Studi was shooting some test scenes. Check it out online. Cris is using some of my songs in the film, and we will be performing in the film as well. I play a singer in a club, giving a spiritual message in the form of a song.
-
We are discussing the possibility touring Canada, thrrough the efforts of corporate sponsors. We shall have to cross our fingers and pray! Anduhyaun is getting rave reviews from the folks we tested it on, and I couldn't be happier!
-
Pony Records out of Switzerland has given me the nod on 2 gigs, and we are hoping to go there in the spring. One of the gigs will be at Castle Serravale, which holds, I believe a 500 seat indoor arena, in Dingio Switzerland!
-
You can now find us on www.garageband.com <http://www.garageband.com> .

Well, sorry to keep it short folks, but we are really working overtime, and I promise I will write as soon as something pops up!
-
Thank you all for logging onto this website which has now had over 7,000 visitors! YOU GUYS ROCK! And thank you for making this dream come true.
-
Peace in all things,

Dear friends,

Thank you for all of the emails regarding Anduhyaun's release. The CD is complete, and we are awaiting copies back from the factory. I am hoping this means that you would all line up in the snow to buy it and that it will fly from the shelves of CDbaby! I have listened to the tracks over and over, and I know you are gonna love this one! It really has gotten to the point where these songs are where traditional native music meets modern music, and they dance beautifully together! Everybody does such a great job, and I have included some remasters of songs from 'Maya' and 'Apache'. There are actually 8 tracks on this one, and with all of the new mastering technology invented by my good friend John Vestman ( www.johnvestmanmastering.com <http://www.johnvestmanmastering.com> ), I couldn't resist adding tracks to this 'single'. Eddie Three Eagles did such an incredible job on Anduhyaun, that we included a solo that is clear, pure, and beautiful.

So hang in there, lovers of native music, because countdown is in!

Jimmy Lee Young a hit with producers in New York!

Jimmy Lee Young and Gil Gabaldon II made quite a splash in New York City! Playing for a packed crowd above 5th Avenue, it was a magical night for the boys! They were accompanied by Chris Webb on bass. (Chris is the grandson of legendary performer Link Wray, and will be seen playing live at this year's Native American Music Awards, on June 8th, in a tribute to his legendary grandfather.) The event was a benefit concert for the film, " The Stone Child" , by Chris Martini. Chris, who by day produces for MTV, and had worked on such projects as T.V.'s, "Touched by an Angel",wrote, and will direct the movie.

He had this to say to Jimmy after the show:

Thanks Jimmy. You guys rocked that night. When you guys got up there the crowd shut up and moved forward
and I looked at you, and your voice went right through them, piercing their soul...and they needed it because they are a people in need of spirit. You wailed your songs and it touched them!

One exec from MTV said, " If I had a record company, I'd sign these guys!" Never one to miss an opportunity to do buisiness, Jimmy discussed the idea of a show highlighting Native talent from the Native American Music Community. " It feels great to be talking with people who are actually willing to listen to these ideas. I have always said that Native Music is a "genre of many genres". Its rock, pop, hip-hop, blues, folk, country, and of course, traditional. How can you miss with that kind of range."
-
Jimmy opened the set with the new single, "Anduhyaun". Carla and Rhys Longton, Jr., sister and nephew of Gil's, were in attendance. Carla had this to say: Those guys rocked! The room got REAL quiet, and all these people moved forward. I was in front, and suddenly there were all these people standing around me! It was unbelieveble! They were in the corner of the room in front of these huge windows at Blink Digital, and the sun was setting in beautiful colors, with 5th Avenue in the backround. It was pure magic!" Rhys Longton, Gil's nephew, was enjoying his first JLY concert, and was awed by the show." I LOVE "One Voice One Cry", from the 'Maya" CD, but live, that song was NUCLEAR!" At this Jimmy turned to Gil and said, " You see... we're NUCLEAR! If the kids think you're nuclear and the adults hear that you are spiritual, then you're not only doing something right, you're doing something highly unusual!"
-
The guys launched into , "Mother Earth, Father Sky", another new song slated for release later this year. It is a beautiful piece, which harkens to the image of Jimmy standing atop the Grand Canyon , arms stretched upward toward the the sky." I wrote that lyric spontaneously, except for the last bit. We'd had a great gig, and an awsome vibe going between Gil, myself and our new friend , flautist Chad Whetstone. He wanted me to write a song, and we just started playing this. I was so thankful for all that we had that weekend, that it just came out. I mean I closed my eyes, and out it came. Chad said it was meant to be. I think so, too."
-
Following with, "Apache", a crowd favorite, and closing with "One Voice One Cry", which won last year's Native American Music award 'Song/Single of the Year, the show was an incredible success with the audience. " Chris says that the show was a big success. We raised 6, 000 dollars in support of the film, and finally got to show off what we do, to the New York execs. I think they were surprised at the sound we have, and are calling it 'new'. What is new, I think, is that we are bringing a certain spirituality to popular music, native style!"
-
Jimmy had suggested to Chris that the characters in the film go to a club, where they happen upon a performer, who gives a spiritual message in a song- and guess who is the performer! After the show, Chris said to Jimmy, " That IS a scene in the film , and you're in it!"
-
The film is scheduled to begin shooting this summer. Currently, Jimmy and Gil are preparing for the release of, "Anduhyaun", which was pushed back due to last year's devastating hurricanes in the Gulf south, and the multiple evacuations of Jimmy's family. "It was horrible. My mother suffered a heart attack, and my niece was 3 months pregnant. She lost the baby. We were all just stunned for weeks after. Everything was just...gone. But even as we brace for another hurricane season, I have faith that we can put all of this behind us, and the Great Spirit, who preserved the lives of my family will take care of us.All through it my mother kept saying,' YOU keep working.' She is a firm believer in our music, and our various missions." Anduhyaun also features the talents of Gil gabaldon II, guitarist Ricky Lewis, 3 time Nammy winner Felipe Rose of the Village People, Female Artist of the Year, Yolanda Martinez, an amazing talent, Best Country Album winner Qua Ti Si, a beautiful songstress of Cree descent, and flautist Eddie Three Eagles.

Hey Guys!~ I am writing to correct a goof I made last letter, when I erroneously identified Ms. Bo Johnson of Native Nation (KRFC, Fort Collins, Colorado), as Bo Hopkins, the famous movie star! This possibly, Freudian slip does prove that in my spare time I have been watching too many movies. Bo Hopkins is not to my knowledge hosting any radio show or playing my CD. But Bo if your reading this I would be glad to send you a copy! Sorry Bo! And thank you for playing the CD.
Also, I want to take moment to thank Molly Cotton of the Skye Ute casino for her great letter, and we are sending you a copy of Rock City magazine with the article and photo. Thank you for everything Molly! You rock!
Peace,
Jimmy

The award show took place on Saturday night, September 10th, where the guys were nominated an unprecedented 4 times in the categories of, Alternative Rock, Classic Rock, Country and Pop Recording, a feat that has left industry insiders stunned! The guys were blown away themselves by the double victory, winning the Best Classic Rock recording for "Serenity" and "Skins", and Best Country recording, for "Rock and Roll Woman , and " Man In Love", all songs from the the latest CD, "Maya",which Jimmy describes as a "crossover Cd, reflecting many moods and grooves". "Maya" has truly 'crossed over" winning awards all over the country ( 4 total, to date, including the First American's In The Arts Awards' Outstanding Musical Achievement award in Los Angeles). It has also garnered a whopping 6 music award nominations! Jimmy dedicated the awards to the women of An Duhyaun, (which means "Our Home" in Ojibwe) the Toronto Ojibwe women's shelter of that same name, (the second oldest in Canada) and to the people and city of New Orleans, the place of his birth, and hometown." We will rise above the floodwaters and fly!", said Jimmy. "And I declare a new dawn for native music! May we take over the mainstream!", words that drew deafening cheers from the packed crowd! He also literally dragged Gil by the hand onto the stage for the second award, and asked the crowd if they would recognize Gil for his hard work, which drew THUNDEROUS applause from the crowd, for Gil. He also thanked, among others, Daryl Dragon and Toni Tennille," for their dedication in helping them, and Native Music, albeit, in the shadows" -until now! The guys closed the show with a performance of 'Apache", and debuted 'Anduhyaun' for an encore!
-
Other nominees included friend and Native American Music Awards' Country Album of the Year Winner, Quatisi, who garnered 3 nominations! "Her voice is pure beauty", said Gil, who has been working on tracks for 'Anduhyaun' with her and Jimmy.
-
Interestingly, the great Martha Radbone won the pop category for her new CD, "Skintalk", which Jimmy says is, "slick, soulful and absolutely hot!" Fans will remember that Martha won the 2002 Native American Music Awards', "Best New Group" award, the first time Jimmy and Gil were nominated, in that category.
-
Today, Jimmy jokes: "Last year, when Martha and I were asked to present awards at the Nammys, we joked that the previous year, Martha won the award, and I went home and cried like a baby! The morning after the ISMA’s, I called her to tell her about her win, and to tell her the next time she wins an award I'm up for, I am marching out to New York, and kicking her butt!! She said, "What? You win TWO AWARDS and you're complaining?" We laughed REALLY hard! She is a great lady, and we share alot of laughs. I hope we get to work together some time, 'cause I really like her and her music, and I really dig her vibe. She and Quatisi have something in common: they really work hard, and are honest, good folks". Redbone is slated to appear in Los Angeles, at the Temple Bar, October 12th. ( visit: http://www.martharedbone.com )
-
After the show, the artists enjoyed a swinging afterparty, and fireworks display at the Indian Summer Festival, on the shores of Lake Michigan. "We signed A LOT of autographs!", said Jimmy. "I remember as a kid just wanting to meet my music heroes, and now I give my fans all the time they want. One of my great examples is Crystal Gayle, who is always polite and kind to her fans, and gives them her time. My mom recently said at the Nammys, that Miss Gayle and her sister, Peggy Sue are , 'Pure sweetness, and pure class.' They are truly good to their fans, and that's kind of star I hope to be one day."
-
That one day may be soon, as offers are coming in, based on the various awards Jimmy and Gil have won, and the availability at this site, of Jimmy's songs, to the record industry execs that can make it happen. For this kind of structure, Jimmy gives all credit to Daryl Dragon, and Toni Tennille.
-
"I want the native people to know how much these folks have done for us, and in turn for native music. Daryl showed us where to put our energies, if we were willing to work for it. They are such good people for doing this, and they have never accepted anything from me in return, except my undying gratitude. They have a rare generosity, an kind aura.
-
Currently, Jimmy and Gil are involved in efforts to raise money for the victims of hurricane Katrina, including a benefit concert in Encino, California on Spetember 18th. They have also tentatively agreed to open for Jackson Brown on November 6th. Both dates will be announced in detail at this site, shortly.

Hey Guys!
Well it was certainly a big week! First, I want to thank you all for the overwhelming support you guys have been pouring on us in regards to Hurricane Katrina. My mom especially sends her love, and gratitude for all the messages we've received, inquiring about my family's safety. She even remarked, " Wow, I didn't realize you were getting so famous!" I just found out that Edwards AFB is sending a contingent of troops, and civilians to the area, and you KNOW I am planning to go! If they won't send me, I still plan to go on my own.
Also, as you know, we are pre-releasing An Duhyaun, and it is available through this site, released September 5th. Just send a request via
the guestbook if you would like a copy. Copies are available for 10 dollars each, and will be on CDbaby in a few days.
Also, I will be performing at the Indian Summer Music Festival on Friday, September 9th. Also, we will be performing at the actual awards show, doing the closing number, and presenting awards as well!
At this time, I would also like to thank the many artists who have done so much to help in these various efforts, especially 3 time Nammy winner Felipe Rose of the Village people.
Felipe, as you know, is a 30 year veteran of the music industry, and has performed on stages around the world. He was so kind to lend his talents to the song, and will no doubt continue to set the world afire with his performances with the Village People. A true professional, Felipe has worked harder than any other Native American artist around, and is in my opinion a living legend. Thank you Felipe!
Well, I will be back with all the latest news from the JLY camp. Til then, please pray for my fellow New Orleaneans who have lost so much.
God bless you all,
Jimmy

Dear friends,|
Thank you for all of your calls and messages. At this time, New Orleans is in danger of further catastrophe, with still-rising waters. I am thanking the creator that all of my family members have called in to each other, and are evacuated and safe. Please say a prayer for the people of all of the towns and cities along the gulf coast that have lost everything. I received this and thought it would be a good idea to pass it along. I promise I will do everything I can for the people of my hometown of New Orleans. Please join me in helping the victims of hurricane Katrina. May the great spirit bless and protect you all.
In respect and gratitude,
Jimmy Lee Young

Hot news!!!
In an impromptu interview with Mr. Dan Smoke of Smoke Signals Radio, ( London/Ontario, Canada), I announced the recording of the summer release single, "Anduhyaun" in honor of the London/Ontario battered women's shelter of the same name. Mr. Smoke states that stage 1 is a 16 bed shelter, and stage 2 is a 6 story shelter with approximately 54 apartments. The project came about during a conversation between Mr. Smoke and myself last year. We were doing an interview, and Mr. Smoke mentioned the shelter to me. It struck me as a beautiful name, and a noble cause. The name means 'a new dawn', and it meant many things to me. We are experiencing a new dawn in native music, with many artists, and many styles, completely unique to each artist. I asked some of my fellow Native American Music Awards winners to join me on this project, including Felipe Rose of the Village People, Yolanda Martinez, ( this year's Best Female Artist), Quatisi ( this year's winner of Best Counrty Album), and flutist Eddie Three Eagles, who recently adopted Felipe Rose! It's an all star ensemble, that I hope will bring awareness to the hard work of the folks at the shelter, and give rays of hope to its occupants. Mr. Smoke has heard the song, and has already suggested entering it into the Aboriginal Music Awards in Canada, next year! Rock on!

The interview can be heard in its entirety, at www.aboriginalradio.com <http://www.aboriginalradio.com> , at 10am eastern standard time and 10pm eastern standard time, 7am and 7pm pacific time, on Tuesday, July 12th. Also, look for interviews with Yolanda, Quatisi, Felipe, and Eddie Three eagles, who Mr. Smoke will be scheduling very soon!
In the same interview, I gave a rave review to Martha Redbone for her new CD. In a bold artistic move, Martha has featured members of AIM ( American Indian Movement) on the CD, showing that she is both a fine artist, and a warrior. Rock on Martha! Also, I once again took the opportunity to extoll the works of Daryl Dragon and Toni Tennille ( classic/current group The Captain and Tennille), and Daryl's brilliant on line concept, Surferzrule! (www.surferzrule.com)

In other news, the Indian Summer Festival Awards are scheduled to announce their nominees this Friday, July 15th.Previous winners include Martha Redbone, and the geat Derek Miller. Watch for nominations!!!
And, there will be a new address announced for JLY merchandise. Jimmy is working on updating the website, and all designs will be shown. At present, anyone interested in advanced orders can email Jimmy at the website.
And finally... congratulations to friend and fellow artist, Camille Nighthorse for her part in the new TNT series by Steven Spielberg, " Into The West". Tune in to catch her performance! Many of our friends including Graham Green, who we have had the honor to meet on many occasions, also star in the production.

And once again thank you all for our continued success. You have helped us to accomplish much, and we are forever greatful. I have included a message that I received from Mr. Smoke, that was very inspirational, and very helpful to me at this time. Until very soon,
Peace,
Jimmy Lee Young

A Spritual message to be shared with all - from Mr. Dan Smoke of Smoke Signals Radio, ( London/Ontario, Canada)

Hi Jimmy Here is a teaching I know that I would like to share with you: "Lakota Indian Story"

"My grandfather took me to the fish pond on the farm when I was about seven, and he told me to throw a stone into the water. He told me to watch the circles created by the stone. Then he asked me to think of myself as that stone person. "You may create lots of splashes in your life but the waves that come from those splashes will disturb the peace of all your fellow creatures," he said. "Remember that you are responsible for what you put in your circle and that circle will also touch many other circles. You will need to live in a way that allows the good that comes from your circle to send the peace of that goodness to others. The splash that comes from anger or jealousy will send those feelings to other circles. You are responsible for both." That was the first time I realized each person creates the inner peace or discord that flows out into the world. We cannot create world peace if we are riddled with inner conflict, hatred, doubt, or anger. We radiate the feelings and thoughts that we hold inside, whether we speak them or not. Whatever is splashing around inside of us is spilling out into the world, creating beauty or discord with all other circles of life.

Remember the eternal wisdom: WHATEVER YOU FOCUS ON EXPANDS..".

"Song of The Year" !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
Hey Guys! Well, we did it!

As you might have heard, we won the "Song of The Year" award at this years Nammy's, for 'One Voice One Cry'! It was an incredible event, and in my opinion, the best Nammy's yet! The show gets better every year, thanks to the founders Ellen Bello, and Donald Kelly. Hats off guys, for all you hard work and efforts!
-
The event was, of course star studded! Our category was announced second. When they called my name I was just stunned. I stood up to thunderous applause, especially from the Native American Music 'Rat Pack', including Felipe Rose, (accompanied by Charles and his great assistant, and my personal buddy, Deb Crawford), Martha Redbone, Micki Free, Yolanda Martinez and others! Thank you guys for voting for me! I accepted my award, and after the press intervews, handed it off to my mom and Gil, who were the real favorites that night!
-
After the show I took her to meet the biggest names in Native music, and they were of course charmed by her, since everyone knows my mom is the nicest, coolest mom ever! I introduced her to country music/native music singing star Crystal Gayle and her charming sister Peggy Sue. You know, sometimes I just can't help myself - I told Miss Gayle that I loved her song, " Talking In Your Sleep", and started singing it from memory. She and Peggy Sue chimed right in, and they sounded as beautiful as falling water! That family is truly amazing! They had performed Peggy Sue's new song, a beautiful ballad whose daring theme points to the many broken treaties the Native American Indian has had to endure over the centuries. It is really deep.We took many photos, and I will tell you that these ladies have all the beauty, class, and patience of true royalty! My mom gave them both rave reviews for their grace. Actually, she raved to <
